Laiba’s Family Receives Money Recovered In Fraud Case
Laiba’s Family Receives Money Recovered In Fraud Case

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the family of Laiba Ijaz in Islamabad on October 21, accompanied by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry.

The visit came as the family continues to cope with the loss of Laiba, a gold-medal-winning student whose death brought attention to an alleged education-related fraud.

During the meeting, Naqvi offered condolences, prayed for the deceased and updated the family on the investigation. He also returned more than Rs5 million to Laiba’s father, Rana Ijaz. The amount had reportedly been recovered in connection with the alleged fraud.

According to reports, Laiba and her family were allegedly deceived by a man who promised to arrange overseas university admission and a scholarship. The family reportedly paid money believing it would help her pursue higher education in the United States, but documents linked to the process were allegedly found to be fraudulent.

Laiba’s father expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Mohsin Naqvi and the officials involved in the case. He said the support shown to his family had brought them some comfort during an extremely painful period. The minister also assured the family that efforts would continue to recover the outstanding amount.

The investigation has reportedly expanded beyond Laiba’s case. According to media reports, investigators found evidence suggesting that 21 other people may also have been defrauded through promises of government employment.

Fake appointment letters were reportedly recovered as part of the inquiry. These allegations highlight the financial and emotional harm that fraudulent education and job offers can cause.

The main suspect, Muhammad Nauman, later died following a firing incident while in police custody, according to police accounts reported by the media. The circumstances surrounding his death raise separate questions that require transparent investigation.

How Premium Seats Became A Fraud Allegation
How Premium Seats Became A Fraud Allegation

More than 20 Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees have been implicated in an alleged Rs 5.06 million seat-allocation fraud at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport. The case involves additional charges collected from passengers for premium and extra-legroom seats on domestic and international flights.

According to audit documents, staff allegedly collected the payments but failed to deposit the money into the airline’s accounts. Instead, premium bookings were reportedly changed to standard seats in the system, concealing the additional charges.

PIA recovered Rs 5,060,269 through deductions from the salaries of employees identified in the case. The money was subsequently deposited into the airline’s account, according to the reported audit documents.

However, reports indicate that the employees concerned continued working in their existing positions, while further disciplinary proceedings were reportedly stalled following intervention by senior officials.

These claims raise questions about whether financial recovery alone is sufficient to address alleged misconduct.

The case raises broader questions about financial controls at Pakistan’s national airline. If passengers pay extra for premium seating, those charges should be properly recorded and deposited. Any alleged manipulation of booking records requires a transparent investigation and appropriate action.

Recovering the money addresses the financial loss, but it does not by itself establish whether all those involved have faced disciplinary consequences.

The allegations against individual employees and claims of interference must also be examined through a fair and documented process. For passengers, the issue goes beyond seat upgrades.

Hamza Shehbaz Shares Vision For Pakistan’s Future
Hamza Shehbaz Shares Vision For Pakistan’s Future

PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz has expressed confidence that Pakistan can achieve major economic progress under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

He described the country’s emergence as an Asian Tiger as an ambition for the years ahead. His remarks also addressed the country's security situation.

Hamza said efforts were being made to eliminate terrorism and emphasised the need to improve people's lives and respond to public concerns. The statement brings two major national priorities into focus: economic development and security.

What Becoming An Asian Tiger Would Mean
What Becoming An Asian Tiger Would Mean

The term Asian Tiger is commonly associated with economies that have achieved rapid growth through industrial development, international trade, investment and rising productivity. Countries such as South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong became known for their economic transformations during the late twentieth century.

For Pakistan, pursuing a similar path would require sustained improvements in manufacturing, exports, infrastructure and the business environment. Greater investment in education, technology and workforce skills would also be important for creating productive jobs and expanding economic opportunities.

Economic Progress And Security Remain Central Challenges
Economic Progress And Security Remain Central Challenges

Hamza's remarks reflect the government's stated focus on economic recovery, public relief and counterterrorism. However, translating these priorities into lasting change will require coordinated action across government institutions, businesses and other parts of society.

A stronger economy would need to create opportunities that reach beyond major commercial centres. Small businesses, farmers, industrial workers and young professionals would all have a role in a development model that aims to increase productivity and broaden access to employment.

Pakistan's ambition to become an Asian economic powerhouse therefore presents a longer-term challenge.

Airbus And Rolls-Royce Enter The Picture
Airbus And Rolls-Royce Enter The Picture

Pakistan is exploring new options to rebuild Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), with discussions underway with the United Kingdom over aircraft and engine arrangements. The talks could open another route for modernising the national carrier as it works to strengthen its international operations.

The proposal involves potential aircraft from Airbus and engines from Rolls-Royce, alongside financing support that could help Pakistan manage the cost of future aviation investments.

Leasing Could Help PIA Move Faster
Leasing Could Help PIA Move Faster

Rather than relying entirely on new aircraft purchases, Pakistan is also considering leasing as a way to meet PIA’s near-term operational needs. This approach could allow the airline to bring additional capacity into service while longer procurement and financing discussions continue.

The airline’s fleet remains central to its ability to operate reliably and serve international destinations. Additional aircraft could help improve availability and provide greater flexibility on important routes, although the outcome would depend on the terms of any future agreements.

The UK discussions form part of Pakistan’s broader search for international partners and financing to support PIA’s recovery.

Pakistan has also explored options involving Boeing aircraft and potential US financing, showing that the airline’s future fleet strategy is still taking shape across multiple channels.

For PIA, the challenge extends beyond acquiring aircraft. A sustainable revival will require reliable operations, competitive services and a fleet capable of meeting passenger demand across domestic and international routes.

Maryam Nawaz Responds To Aircraft Criticism
Maryam Nawaz Responds To Aircraft Criticism

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has responded to criticism surrounding her use of the provincial government’s aircraft, questioning whether she should instead rely on a motorcycle or public transport for official travel.

The remarks came during a senior officers’ leadership course in Lahore, where she again addressed questions about the government-owned aircraft. Maryam said the plane belongs to the office of the Punjab chief minister, rather than being her personal property, and noted that the facility is available to provincial chief executives.

Why Maryam Says She Uses The Aircraft

Maryam has argued that travelling by air allows her to save time, which she considers important given the demands of running Punjab. She has pointed to the need for frequent journeys within the province as well as international travel connected to official responsibilities.

Addressing the criticism, she previously asked whether she should travel to distant engagements by Qingqi, motorcycle or Metrobus instead of using the aircraft. She also said that being chief minister means remaining connected with government work even while travelling.

The aircraft at the centre of the discussion is a Gulfstream G500, which the Punjab government has acknowledged cost approximately Rs9 billion. Maryam has stressed that the aircraft belongs to the provincial government and the chief minister’s office, rather than to her personally.

She has also said that she would not take the aircraft with her after completing her tenure. According to her, official travel by air is intended to reduce time spent travelling and allow her to continue working while away from Lahore.
