After PIMS, Another Hospital Fire Raises a Bigger Question

A fire broke out inside the operation theater of Shaikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan on Saturday, September 5, briefly creating a tense situation for patients and hospital staff.
According to rescue officials, the fire was apparently caused by an electrical short circuit, while smoke spread through parts of the facility. Patients inside the affected operation theater were promptly moved to safer areas as emergency teams responded.
Rescue personnel reportedly reached the hospital within around two minutes and began firefighting operations.

The quick evacuation of patients demonstrated the importance of having effective emergency procedures in healthcare facilities. Hospital staff acted to move people away from the affected area while rescue personnel focused on controlling the fire.
The rapid arrival of rescue teams also helped contain the situation before it could cause greater disruption. No casualties have been reported in connection with the incident so far.
While the immediate response was successful, incidents like this highlight why hospitals must continuously review their emergency systems.

Rahim Yar Khan Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar Jappa took notice of the incident and ordered an immediate report. The Assistant Commissioner was also directed to visit the hospital, assess the situation and coordinate with relevant departments.
Authorities are expected to determine the exact cause of the fire and review the hospital’s existing safety arrangements. The findings can help identify areas where preventive measures may be strengthened.
The incident comes days after the tragic fire at PIMS in Islamabad that claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies, bringing hospital safety into sharper focus.
