A City Built Without A Blueprint
A City Built Without A Blueprint

Ant colonies can create elaborate underground systems of tunnels, chambers, nurseries and waste areas, even though there is no architect ant directing the construction.

Scientists studying Lasius niger found that individual ants can follow simple building responses that collectively produce complex nest structures. Computer models based entirely on experimentally observed ant behaviour were able to reproduce patterns seen in real nests. One important mechanism is called stigmergy.

Leaf-Cutting Ants Build Underground Infrastructure
Leaf-Cutting Ants Build Underground Infrastructure

One of the most striking examples comes from Atta vollenweideri, a leaf-cutting ant found in South America. These ants construct underground nests containing fungus-growing chambers, waste chambers and ventilation tunnels. Scientists have reproduced parts of this architecture in laboratory experiments to understand how the colonies regulate their underground environment.

In one study, researchers worked with a laboratory colony containing approximately 60–70 litres of fungus garden distributed across 16–19 chambers.

The ventilation system of Atta vollenweideri provides one of the clearest examples of collective construction. Workers build small structures called ventilation turrets above underground openings. Researchers tested whether conditions inside the nest influenced what the ants built.

The results were striking. Under normal atmospheric conditions, the experimental turrets typically had about one opening.

The same principle helps explain how an apparently complicated ant colony can function without a central commander. Workers respond to local information such as the presence of building material, existing structures and conditions around them.

Their actions then alter the environment, creating new signals for other workers. In the Atta vollenweideri experiments, researchers measured turret construction after only 24 hours under different environmental conditions.

A New Penguin Species
A New Penguin Species

Scientists studying gentoo penguins made a surprising discovery after examining their DNA. A new study found that what was previously classified as one group of gentoo penguins actually consists of four distinct species.

Researchers analysed the genomes of 64 penguins from 10 breeding colonies across their geographical range.

The genetic evidence revealed thousands of differences between the populations, helping scientists understand how they evolved separately.

How Scientists Found It
How Scientists Found It

Gentoo penguins live across Antarctica, South America and remote islands, making them particularly challenging to study. Their isolated habitats had also made it difficult to determine whether different populations were species or subspecies.

Using whole genome sequencing, researchers examined the genetic makeup of penguins from colonies spread across the genus’ range. They found clear genetic differences between four populations.

Scientists estimate that the groups began diverging around 300,000 to 500,000 years ago.

Each Species Adapted Differently
Each Species Adapted Differently

The study found that the different gentoo species have developed genetic traits suited to their individual environments.

The southern gentoo penguin, found around the Antarctic Peninsula and South Georgia, has more genes associated with fat and lipid storage and heat production. These characteristics can help survival in colder conditions.

The northern gentoo penguin, found around South America, has more genes linked to cardiac contraction and muscle activity. Researchers suggest these adaptations may help the birds remain underwater while hunting.

Why the Discovery Matters
Why the Discovery Matters

The discovery is significant for both science and conservation. Genetic research is giving scientists a clearer understanding of penguin diversity and showing how different populations have adapted to their surroundings.

That knowledge could become increasingly important as climate change affects penguin habitats. Island species with small populations can be particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels and changing ecosystems, because they may have nowhere else to go.

For scientists, identifying four gentoo species provides a stronger foundation for studying and protecting them.

What If Our Universe Has More Dimensions?
What If Our Universe Has More Dimensions?

Scientists have long wondered whether the universe contains dimensions beyond the three familiar dimensions of space, plus time.

One theory suggests that our visible universe could actually be a three dimensional surface existing within a much larger, higher dimensional space.

Known as the braneworld model, the idea proposes that particles and even light may be confined to this surface. That could explain why humans cannot directly observe the dimensions beyond it.

Physicists Raman Sundrum and Lisa Randall developed one influential version of this idea in 1999.

Hidden Dimensions Could Change How Space Works
Hidden Dimensions Could Change How Space Works

The theory suggests that extra dimensions could contain hidden forms of space time curvature and gravitational fields.

Although these structures might surround our universe, they could remain invisible because our particles and light are restricted to our familiar three dimensional space.

Physicist Raman Sundrum uses a simple thought experiment to explain the concept.

Imagine entering a room that appears completely normal, but where your size changes dramatically as you move across it. The strange effect would be caused by the room’s geometry being warped.

Could This Explain a Major Physics Mystery?
Could This Explain a Major Physics Mystery?

One reason scientists find extra dimensions intriguing is their possible connection to the hierarchy problem, which concerns the enormous differences between the scales associated with fundamental particles.

The Randall Sundrum model proposes that a warped extra dimension could help explain why particles such as electrons and quarks appear to have dramatically different physical scales.

Instead of these differences being completely unexplained, they could emerge from where particles exist within a higher dimensional structure.

Scientists Are Still Searching for Evidence
Scientists Are Still Searching for Evidence

The fascinating theory remains unproven, because scientists have not yet detected the predicted warping or the heavier versions of familiar particles that could exist within extra dimensions.

Researchers have searched for these possible signs using powerful experiments, including the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Switzerland. So far, no definitive evidence has confirmed that extra dimensions exist.

That does not mean the search is over. Future particle accelerators with greater energy could offer new opportunities to test the theory.

A Rapid Energy Shift in Pakistan’s Power Sector Toward Sustainability
A Rapid Energy Shift in Pakistan’s Power Sector Toward Sustainability

Pakistan is experiencing a major shift in its energy landscape as solar power becomes one of the fastest-growing electricity sources.

Rising electricity tariffs, frequent load shedding, and long-standing pressure on the national grid have pushed households, businesses, and industries to look for cleaner and more reliable alternatives.

Solar energy is now seen not just as an option, but as a practical solution for long-term energy stability and cost savings.

Across major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, rooftop solar installations are increasing at a rapid pac

How is Rooftop Solar Booming in Pakistan’s Energy Sector?

Residential homes, shopping centers, office buildings, and industrial units are installing photovoltaic systems to reduce dependence on the national grid.

This shift is changing the way electricity is produced and consumed, as more consumers become prosumers both producing and using their own electricity.

A key factor behind this growth is Pakistan’s net metering policy regulated by NEPRA.

This system allows solar users to send excess electricity back to the national grid and receive credits on their electricity bills.

By improving the financial return on solar investments and reducing payback time, net metering has encouraged widespread adoption among households, commercial properties, and industrial users.

Pakistan’s solar capacity has expanded significantly in recent years. Net-metered solar installations surpassed 4 gigawatts by late 2024 and continued growing beyond 6 gigawatts by mid-2025.

This rapid expansion reflects strong demand across both urban and semi-urban areas. In addition to grid-connected systems, off-grid solar solutions such as battery-backed home systems.

Pakistan’s long-term solar potential remains highly promising due to its abundant sunlight, high solar irradiance levels, and improving technology affordability.

Falling global prices of solar panels and increasing interest from industries such as textiles, manufacturing, and agriculture are expected to accelerate adoption further.

With better policies, financing options, and energy storage solutions, solar power could become a central pillar of Pakistan’s energy independence.
