Two Pakistani astronaut candidates are currently undergoing training at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, opening the possibility of Pakistan having an astronaut take part in a future mission to China’s space station.
The development was shared by Yang Liwei, China’s first astronaut in space and deputy chief designer of its manned space programme. He said the Pakistani candidates are expected to participate in future missions alongside Chinese astronauts.

Under the current plan, one of the Pakistani astronauts could participate in a short-duration space mission as a payload specialist.
This role would involve supporting specific mission objectives and potentially carrying out activities linked to scientific or technical work aboard China’s space station.
Their ongoing training is preparing them for the demanding requirements of spaceflight while allowing them to train alongside China’s astronaut corps. The programme also represents a new chapter in Pakistan-China cooperation in space exploration and human spaceflight.

If the planned mission goes ahead, a Pakistani astronaut aboard China’s space station would mark a significant moment for the country’s participation in human space exploration.
The training programme also gives Pakistan an opportunity to build experience in astronaut preparation, space science and international missions.
The candidates' involvement could contribute to deeper cooperation between the two countries in the growing field of space technology. For Pakistan, the prospect is not only about reaching space.
