Prime Minister Prepares For Moscow Visit With Pakistani Business Leaders
Prime Minister Prepares For Moscow Visit With Pakistani Business Leaders

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to travel to Moscow during the first week of December, accompanied by a large delegation of Pakistani business representatives.

The planned visit is aimed at expanding commercial engagement between Pakistan and Russia through direct discussions with government and business leaders.

Preparations for the trip were reviewed at a meeting chaired by the prime minister, where arrangements for his upcoming engagements were discussed. A key part of the programme will be his address to a joint Pakistan-Russia business forum in the Russian capital.

The accompanying delegation is expected to include business leaders who will have an opportunity to explore commercial connections with Russian counterparts. The joint business forum is intended to provide a platform for discussions on trade, investment and potential partnerships between companies from both countries.

The gathering will bring private-sector interests alongside official diplomatic engagements, allowing business representatives to discuss opportunities beyond government-level negotiations. Such interactions can help companies identify potential markets, establish contacts and explore areas of mutual commercial interest.

A hospital built with financial assistance from China has officially reopened in Islamabad, bringing a previously unused healthcare facility back into service after remaining closed for several years. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the Pak-China Friendship Hospital in Chak Shahzad on October 29, 2026.

Originally established during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the hospital was created to provide isolation and treatment facilities for patients suffering from infectious diseases. Despite being completed and inaugurated within just 40 days, the facility became non-operational after the pandemic subsided and remained underutilised.

Announcing the hospital's revival, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government would cover the entire cost of medical treatment, ensuring that patients would not have to pay for healthcare services at the facility. He added that people from any part of Pakistan would be able to seek treatment there.

The hospital will be managed by the Indus Hospital and Health Network, while the federal government will finance patient care. This public-private partnership is intended to combine government funding with the network's experience in managing healthcare facilities and delivering medical services.

China contributed a grant of approximately $4 million towards the hospital's construction, while the overall project cost was estimated at around Rs980 million. The facility was developed by the Frontier Works Organisation in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority and the National Institute of Health.

Located near the National Institute of Health in Chak Shahzad, the hospital occupies approximately 40 kanals and includes patient wards, laboratories and other essential medical infrastructure. Its revival is expected to provide additional healthcare capacity and help reduce pressure on other hospitals in the capital.

A Diplomatic Protest Inside The Summit Hall
A Diplomatic Protest Inside The Summit Hall

A diplomatic gathering in Azerbaijan took an unexpected turn on October 15 when Pakistan and several other delegations left the hall as Israeli President Isaac Herzog began speaking at the seventh summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

Representatives from Pakistan, Türkiye, Iran, Kuwait and the Palestinian Authority were among those who walked out. Reports also indicated that officials from additional countries took part in the protest.

The coordinated departure brought the issue of Palestine into focus at a summit intended to promote regional dialogue and cooperation.

Why The Walkout Matters
Why The Walkout Matters

The walkout was a visible diplomatic gesture at a gathering where countries with sharply different positions on Israel were represented. Rather than remaining in their seats during Herzog’s address, the participating delegations chose to register their objection through their departure.

Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan also used his address to call on CICA members to stand firmly behind Palestinian rights. He argued that protecting those rights was incompatible with overlooking violations against Palestinians and reiterated support for an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. <Cite refs={[turn331988search6,turn331988search9]}/>

The summit brought together countries seeking cooperation on regional security, connectivity, digital development and sustainable growth. Yet the walkout showed how the conflict surrounding Israel and Palestine continues to affect diplomatic engagement well beyond West Asia.

Iran also called for Israel to be expelled from CICA, with its representative accusing Israel and the United States of contributing to regional instability. Israel, meanwhile, used the gathering to advocate stronger cooperation with Asian countries across areas including technology, healthcare, agriculture and energy. <Cite refs={[turn331988news3,turn331988search2]}/>

Could Karachi Learn From Shanghai’s Urban Transformation?
Could Karachi Learn From Shanghai’s Urban Transformation?

Karachi may look to one of China’s most prominent cities for ideas on improving how it moves, grows and delivers public services. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has proposed a formal partnership between Karachi and Shanghai, opening the door to greater cooperation between the two major port cities.

The proposal emerged during a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Zhu Zhongming, where both sides discussed expanding economic links, investment opportunities and collaboration in technology and urban development.

The Shanghai mayor welcomed the idea, although the partnership has been proposed rather than formally established.

What Could The Partnership Bring To Karachi?

One area of potential cooperation is public transport. Shanghai’s experience in managing a large, fast-moving urban population could offer useful lessons as Karachi continues to explore improvements to its own transport network, including the Karachi Circular Railway.

Digital services and smart-city planning are also on the agenda. The proposed exchange could allow officials to study how technology can make urban services more accessible and help city authorities manage infrastructure more efficiently.

For Karachi, the value of such a partnership would depend on how effectively ideas are adapted to local needs.

The proposal also reflects an effort to strengthen ties between Pakistan and China beyond conventional trade and investment.

Direct cooperation between Karachi and Shanghai could create opportunities for businesses, public institutions and technical experts to exchange knowledge and explore joint initiatives.

Both cities have important port and commercial roles, making economic cooperation another potential area of interest. Stronger institutional links could help build connections between businesses while opening discussions around technology, infrastructure and development.

Defence Pact Moves Into Its Next Phase
Defence Pact Moves Into Its Next Phase

A trilateral security arrangement involving Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia has moved from agreement to implementation, with the three countries preparing to put their collective defence commitments into practice.

The decision came at an emergency meeting in Riyadh on October 5, where senior political and military officials reviewed the security situation facing Saudi Arabia.

The meeting brought together Pakistan’s Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Asim Munir and Khawaja Asif with senior Saudi and Turkish officials.

Under the new arrangements, the member states will make available the military capabilities already agreed upon within the defence framework. Any deployment will be carried out according to the countries’ existing arrangements and national laws.

The objective is to improve the three militaries’ ability to coordinate during a security crisis. The agreement also seeks to strengthen readiness, military integration and collective deterrence as the countries respond to emerging threats.

Alongside the decision on military readiness, the alliance has begun building its permanent institutional structure. Lieutenant General Nauman Mahmood (Retd.) of Pakistan has been appointed as the Makkah Alliance’s first Secretary-General for a three-year term.

The agreement is built around the principle that the security of one member forms part of the collective security of all three. Its implementation is therefore intended to create a more coordinated response when any member faces a serious security threat.

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye on August 7, 2026, creating a framework for closer cooperation in security and defence. Under the agreement, an armed attack against one member is regarded as an attack against all three.

The countries have since moved towards developing the agreement’s institutional structure. An earlier committee meeting in Istanbul on August 31 agreed to establish a Secretariat in Saudi Arabia and strengthen cooperation in areas including defence industries, technology development and joint production.

The three countries are also expected to discuss the latest developments across the region, with the meeting taking place amid heightened security concerns. Turkish officials said the talks would address regional developments as well as progress in the institutionalisation of the alliance.

Pakistan has described its participation as part of its continued contribution towards regional peace and stability. The agreement’s members have previously expressed support for de escalation, restraint and peaceful solutions to regional crises.
