Sidra Qasim and Waqas Ali met in Okara and connected through conversations about life, society and ideas. For Sidra, who had grown up with pressure to follow a conventional path, Waqas was someone who took her ambitions seriously.
Their relationship gradually grew alongside their professional journey. Waqas eventually invited Sidra to join him in Lahore as a business partner, where they began working together on a small social media company.
Their families initially resisted the idea of Sidra moving away and pursuing an independent career. But she eventually received permission, and the two began building their future together.

After working together in Lahore, Sidra and Waqas discovered an opportunity in something much closer to home: traditional Pakistani footwear.
They met craftsmen in a small village workshop in Okara, where leather shoes were being produced by hand. The pair began working with them and launched a collection called Hometown Shoes.
The first order arrived soon after they launched their website. But success did not come overnight.

The challenges they faced also brought them closer. Sidra later described how they became bonded by their shared journey of challenging expectations and trying to create independent lives.
Eventually, the couple got married and continued working toward their ambitions together. Their next major step was applying to Y Combinator, one of the world’s best known startup accelerators.
They were accepted and moved to the United States, taking their small Pakistani footwear venture into an entirely new environment.

The couple’s journey eventually led to the creation of Atoms, a New York based footwear company known for its comfortable sneakers and quarter sizing. What began with visits to a small workshop in Okara had grown into an international business.
But their story remains meaningful because the success was not built overnight. It came through years of uncertainty, experimentation, setbacks and persistence.
Sidra and Waqas built their professional lives alongside their relationship, learning how to divide responsibilities, support one another and keep moving forward.
