Koh-e-Kaaf: Where the Fairy Kingdom Begins
Koh-e-Kaaf: Where the Fairy Kingdom Begins

Across the Hindu Kush, some of the highest peaks are more than spectacular landscapes in local folklore. They are imagined as boundaries between the human world and the mysterious kingdom of the Paris.

Among the most fascinating is Terich Mir, the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush, rising to around 7,700 metres above Chitral.

Traditional stories associate these remote, snow covered peaks with Koh-e-Kaaf, the legendary homeland of supernatural beings.

Saif-ul-Malook: The Prince Who Fell for a Fairy
Saif-ul-Malook: The Prince Who Fell for a Fairy

Few Pakistani legends are as famous as the story of Saif-ul-Malook, the prince said to have fallen in love with the fairy princess Badr-e-Jamal.

The tale is associated with the spectacular Lake Saif-ul-Malook in Kaghan Valley, where the surrounding mountains and reflective waters have helped keep the legend alive.

The romance was immortalised in the celebrated Punjabi Sufi poem Saif-ul-Malook, written by 19th century poet Mian Muhammad Bakhsh.

The Fairies Who Protected the Wild
The Fairies Who Protected the Wild

In folklore from Chitral and Kalash communities, the Paris are sometimes portrayed not simply as beautiful supernatural beings, but as powerful guardians of the mountains and their wildlife.

Traditional stories connect them with wild animals, including the markhor, and with the protection of remote mountain pastures.

Some oral traditions describe hunters seeking the unseen permission of supernatural guardians before entering certain areas or hunting.

Northern Pakistani folklore also contains mysterious stories of people who disappeared into the mountains and later claimed to have encountered supernatural beings or entered hidden kingdoms.

Some tales describe humans being taken into the world of the Paris, with stories of impossible journeys, prolonged disappearances and even marriages between humans and supernatural beings.

Whether understood as literal belief, symbolic storytelling or imaginative explanations for unexplained disappearances, these tales reveal how deeply the supernatural has been woven into mountain culture.
