Punjab Unveils Five-Year Plan to Introduce 5,000 Electric Buses

The Punjab government has announced a comprehensive plan to introduce 5,000 electric buses across the province over the next five years.
The initiative is aimed at modernising the public transport network while promoting cleaner and more sustainable modes of travel.
The project forms part of the provincial government's broader efforts to improve mobility, reduce environmental pollution, and provide commuters with safer and more reliable transportation services. Officials believe the transition to electric vehicles will transform the public transport sector across Punjab.

The initial phase of the programme will include the deployment of 1,500 electric buses across 91 tehsils throughout Punjab.
The expansion is expected to improve transportation services by offering affordable and dependable travel options to a larger segment of the population.
Provincial authorities have confirmed that 189 electric buses are already prepared for deployment, while an additional 488 buses are scheduled to arrive from China later this month. These vehicles will help accelerate the rollout of the new transport system.

Alongside the expansion of the electric bus fleet, the Punjab government has initiated local assembly of electric buses within the province.
The move is expected to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and support the long-term development of Pakistan’s automotive industry.
Local production is also expected to generate new employment opportunities by creating demand for skilled workers and supporting businesses involved in vehicle manufacturing and related services. Officials believe this approach will reduce reliance on imported vehicles over time.

The introduction of electric buses is expected to reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions by replacing conventional public transport vehicles with cleaner alternatives.
This shift supports ongoing efforts to improve air quality and encourage environmentally responsible transportation.
Passengers are expected to benefit from quieter, more comfortable, and energy-efficient buses equipped to meet the needs of modern urban travel.
The new fleet is designed to provide a safer and more convenient commuting experience for people across Punjab.
