Maryam Nawaz Demands Faster Results From Suthra Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given the Suthra Punjab programme seven days to improve sanitation services across the province. The directive focuses on ensuring adequate staff, functioning machinery, efficient waste collection and stronger monitoring of cleanliness operations.
During a special meeting to review the programme, officials were instructed to introduce a detailed cleanliness plan and implement the Suthra Punjab beat system across Punjab within the deadline. A progress report is also due next week to assess the measures taken.
The review covered the performance of sanitation companies, waste transportation, workforce availability and field supervision.

The chief minister ordered a performance-based review of private sanitation companies, setting clear thresholds for action. Firms scoring below 80 per cent in any tehsil will receive warnings, while those scoring under 50 per cent are to be removed.
Authorities have also been directed to terminate non-performing contractors and activate self-operated sanitation services within a week.
The instructions also address the payment of sanitation workers. Outstanding salaries must be cleared, with unpaid dues recovered from companies responsible for the arrears.

The provincial government has also directed authorities to ensure that rural areas are cleaned at least every alternate day, with accumulated garbage removed from villages.
The instructions extend the programme’s focus beyond major urban centres to communities where irregular waste collection can leave rubbish unattended for extended periods.
According to the meeting, anti-littering squads operating across Punjab’s divisions have conducted 264,000 visits. These visits included issuing warnings and raising awareness about violations of sanitation standard operating procedures.
