Nurse Razia Noreen has been honoured for her extraordinary courage during the tragic PIMS fire, after she risked her own life to rescue a critically vulnerable newborn from the neonatal unit.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that Noreen will receive the Tamgha e Khidmat on March 23 in recognition of her bravery and dedication. She was also presented with a Rs10 million reward.
Noreen recalled that she immediately entered the affected area after seeing the fire, focusing on getting the babies to safety despite the smoke, darkness and danger.

When the fire broke out, Noreen said she did not stop to think about her own safety. She immediately instructed another nurse to help evacuate the children and went inside to rescue them.
She managed to bring out a premature baby weighing just 1,050 grams, later identified as the child of Asifa. Amid the confusion, she ensured the newborn was handed safely to someone she trusted before returning to help others.
Noreen said she was simply fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to her. She also highlighted the dedication of her fellow nurses, saying they too continued performing their duties with courage during the emergency.

Noreen’s recognition also highlights the importance of protecting healthcare workers and improving emergency preparedness in hospitals. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated that those responsible for the PIMS fire will face strict action.
He also directed a comprehensive review and restructuring of the hospital, stressing that safety standards must be strengthened. The incident has brought renewed attention to the need for reliable fire prevention systems, emergency exits and effective evacuation procedures.
Alongside recognising individual heroes, improving hospital infrastructure can help prevent future tragedies.
