Punjab Launches Diaspora Doctor Programme to Strengthen Public Healthcare

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the launch of the Diaspora Doctor Locum Programme (DDLP), a new healthcare initiative designed to bring overseas Pakistani and foreign specialist doctors to public hospitals across the province.
The programme aims to improve access to advanced medical procedures and specialized healthcare services for patients.
Under the initiative, internationally qualified doctors will serve in selected government hospitals on short-term assignments, contributing their expertise in various medical fields.

The Diaspora Doctor Locum Programme will initially be implemented in 12 public sector hospitals across Punjab.
Participating doctors will perform advanced surgical procedures, provide specialist consultations, and support the delivery of high-quality healthcare services during their assignments.
Eligibility requirements include recognized specialist qualifications, overseas fellowship experience, and professional fitness certification. Doctors joining the programme will be required to serve for a minimum period, ensuring meaningful engagement with healthcare institutions.

In addition to providing medical services, international specialists participating in the programme will help train local doctors by sharing advanced clinical knowledge and modern treatment techniques.
The initiative is expected to contribute to long-term capacity building within Punjab’s healthcare sector.
The provincial government has emphasized the importance of professional development and knowledge transfer as part of its healthcare reform efforts. Officials believe collaboration between local and international medical experts will improve standards of care.

During the review meeting, officials provided updates on several major healthcare projects that are nearing completion.
The Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology in Sargodha is expected to be inaugurated on July 15, while the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research is scheduled to open on July 31.
The Jinnah Institute of Cardiology in Lahore is also progressing toward completion, with its inauguration expected on August 15.
These facilities are being developed to expand access to specialized treatment and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the province.
