Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered authorities to make the SMS service used for registration under the government’s petrol relief scheme completely free. The move is intended to remove an additional cost for citizens trying to access the subsidy.
The scheme covers motorcycles, rickshaws, three wheelers and cars with engine capacities of up to 800cc. Eligible motorcycle and three wheeler users can receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 20 litres a month, while qualifying small cars can receive the same relief on up to 30 litres.
The government has also directed officials to guide applicants through registration and increase public awareness about the process.
Eligible applicants can register from home by sending their details to 9771 using a SIM registered in their own name. The required information includes the applicant’s CNIC number, vehicle registration number, province code and vehicle registration date.
Once the registration is successfully verified, applicants receive confirmation. Before purchasing subsidised petrol, they must then send TOK to 9771 to receive a fuel relief token.
The system is designed to verify both the applicant and vehicle before the subsidy is provided.
The petrol relief programme is being rolled out in stages. The Islamabad phase began during the night of September 14–15, while the nationwide rollout, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, is scheduled from the night of September 16–17.
During a review meeting, officials reported that more than 600,000 SMS messages had already been received from the Islamabad region, with 42,933 applicants successfully registered at that stage.
